HAFNEY

HAFNEY - Hospital Arts for North East Yorkshire

Registered Charity No. 1091898

"Hospital design has to pay attention to the impact the patient environment has on the individual patient - their state of mind, their prospects of recovery, their sense of well-being."  - Rt Hon Alan Milburn MP, 2001

"There is an emerging body of evidence which links the healing environment to improved health and well being"  - Hazel Blears MP, 2003

Role of Arts in Healthcare

The importance of the arts and good design in improving outcomes and well being in healthcare has been increasingly accepted and now forms a significant part of the body of evidence that fuels the concept of evidence based design. Evidence based design developed from the realisation that  research could demonstrate a direct link between patient health and quality of care and the way a hospital is designed.

"Just as evidence-based medicine is revolutionizing health care treatment, evidence-based design is transforming the healthcare environment. We now have at our disposal proven architectural methods for improving patient outcomes, safety, and satisfaction, as well as staff retention and service efficiency."  - Craig Zimring, Centre for Health Design.

HAFNEY

Hospital Arts For North East Yorkshire, or hafney for short, was established in 1999 and became a registered charity in 2001.

HAFNEY's registered aim is to relieve sickness and preserve and protect physical, mental and emotional health particularly through the use of the arts including but not limited to visual, performing, environmental and media arts, in the area of North Easy Yorkshire
hafney is run by a Board of Trustees who include representatives of the local health and arts communities. We work in close co-operation with Jo Davis, the Arts Co-ordinator at Scarborough and North East Yorkshire Healthcare NHS Trust (SNEYHT), to fund and deliver Arts in Healthcare projects for local  NHS Trusts in particular SNEYHT, which runs Scarborough and Bridlington Hospitals and thus provides Acute Hospital Services for our area, and Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale Primary Care Trust (SWRPCT) which amongst its other roles runs the community hospitals at Malton and Whitby.

Completed works of art are owned by the Donated Funds Committee for SNEYHT and SWRPCT, which is also an independently regulated body, and works may not be sold or disposed of without the agreement of that committee and hafney. If this were to happen the value of the work would have to be reinvested in line with hafney's aims.

The value of the work we do has been recognised by a report on Arts in Healthcare in this Region prepared for the National Network for Arts in Healthcare by Mike White, Director of Projects at the Centre for Arts and Humanities in Health and Medicine, who described the Arts Project at Scarborough as "a hidden gem".

Objects including pieces of metal and wire are sandwiched between sheets of glass which are then heated and fused. The product of one of our earliest residencies. Poster explaining the work of Heads Together, a Leeds based arts group, who installed a sound system in one of the main link corridors in Scarborough that plays a 4 hour compilation of Scarborough Sounds starting with the morning chorus in Forge Valley and ending with closing time in Town. One of a set of three prints produced by Helen Kozich as part of a residency within the Operating Theatres. The three prints reflect the work of the theatres, the central sterile supplies unit that supports them and the theatre staff. A workshop in a local school run by one of our artists in residence, Sian Hughes. The collaboration with pupils resulted in some of the pupils work being included in the finished installation at Malton Hospital. Secretary of State for Health, Patricia Hewitt, saw work by Jane Poulton on a recent visit to Malton Hospital. This project included designs for flooring, glass etching and gardens as well as a number of pieces similar to those seen here.

Projects

Since 1999, hafney has helped fund and administer more than 30 specific projects. These have included:-

  • The Arts provision for major new buildings such as the Holly, Ash and Willow Ward development at Scarborough and the Fitzwilliam Ward Redevelopment at Malton, where the artists have worked in close co-operation with the architects and developers to incorporate their designs in the fabric of the building as well as providing individual pieces for the finished buildings.
  • A series of more than 15 artist's residencies spread throughout the area's hospitals which have resulted in the production of more than 100 separate works for the hospitals including paintings, photographs, fabric art and tapestry, stained glass, fused glass sculpture, ceramic and metal sculptural plaques and a sound installation.
  • As well as the working with patients and staff of the hospitals, we have also developed links with local schools and colleges. As a result the pupils of some local schools have had the opportunity to work with a professional artist in developing ideas for pieces for the hospital and some have seen their own pieces become part of the finished scheme.
  • Students on Fine Arts Courses at a number of local colleges have provided pieces for their local hospitals as part of a Public Art segment of their course work and a number of those pieces have subsequently been purchased or donated to the hospital concerned.
  • Live musical performances on rehabilitation and long stay wards. These have proved extremely popular with patients, staff and relatives.
  • A number of specific purchases/commissions from local artists

Future Plans

As well as continuing to fund and manage the provision of new art works for the local hospitals, we wish to continue to use the arts project to develop the ties between the local health service and the wider community by organising further residencies with local schools and spreading the arts project into other settings such as GP surgeries and local clinics.

In the longer term, we would like to be able to provide workshop space within one of the hospitals for the use of visiting artists.

Funding

Each year we need to raise at least £8,000 simply to fund the post of the local NHS Arts Co-ordinator, and then fund projects in addition. A residency costs  between £3,000 and £4,500 depending on the materials and other expenses involved, a musical performance £200.

Over the last 6 years we have received funding from Newcastle and North Tyneside Healthcare Charitable Trust Fund, the Yorkshire Region of Arts Council England, North Yorkshire County Council, East Yorkshire County Council, Scarborough Borough Council, Whitby Regeneration Fund and Westler Foods as well as a number of personal donations.

As a registered charity we are regulated by, and provide an annual report to,  the Charity Commissioners for England and Wales,  and we have our accounts inspected each year  by an independent accountant.

Donations

We are grateful for any offer of funding however small and happily acknowledge financial donations in any publicity, documentation and labelling for the relevant project.
